The Embrace

This is the most unusual thing that has ever happened. No one so far
has ever come forward of the many countries who just closed their doors
on us to say we're sorry and to apologize. That is historic. -- Liesl
Loeb, St. Louis Survivor

Your gesture of repentance is a deep
gesture... There have been dark pages in the history between Christians
and Jews. For many, many years these pages were defined as a monologue
from Christians towards Jews. Your gesture means that from now on we
have a togetherness, a dialogue. -- Rabbi Michael Melchior, Deputy
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Government of Israel

You bring a message of peace. You bring a message of conciliation,
conciliation between Christians and Jews. -- His Excellency Haim Divon,
Israeli Ambassador to Canada

I am convinced that anyone who knows the full story of what is going on
here will have the same reaction... Firstly I'm a little bit skeptical -
are these guys crazy or not? And then the more you realize how deeply
committed they are, you realize they aren't crazy. This is the way it
should be. -- Rabbi Reuven Bulka, Ottawa, Canada

In 1939, the S.S. St. Louis desperately sought a port of refuge for more
than 900 Jewish passengers who were fleeing Nazi Germany. After the
nations of South America and the United States refused them entry, they
appealed to Canada as their last hope. When Canada decided to reject
the St. Louis, the ship was forced to return to Europe and many of its
passengers later perished in the Nazi death camps. |
Almost 60 years later, David Demian began encouraging Canadian church
leaders to take responsibility for the anti-semitic sins of their
forefathers, beginning a journey of healing and reconciliation that
would span years and continents. A journey of a nation owning its past
that it might embrace its future.

This is the destiny of Canada.
Canada will put their arms
around the Jewish people and say, "It will
never happen again." --
David Demian
